{"id":2091,"date":"2013-03-31T16:12:03","date_gmt":"2013-03-31T20:12:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/?p=2091"},"modified":"2013-04-09T17:48:44","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T21:48:44","slug":"on-the-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/?p=2091","title":{"rendered":"On the level"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the fuselage upright on the cradle, I needed a way to level it from side to side and forward to aft to prepare for drilling the aft deck. \u00a0Being the obsessive engineer that I am, I wanted a way to make small adjustments and re-level if necessary. \u00a0After a little braining on the problem, I came up with this poor man&#8217;s jackscrew.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8445.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2093\" alt=\"Poor man's jackscrew\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8445-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8445-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8445-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8445-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s a 1\/2&#8243; bolt centered in a piece of fir 2&#8243;x4&#8243;, and I made four of them &#8211; one for each corner of the cradle. \u00a0The bolt head will rest on the floor, and the bottom nut will adjust the bolt up and down.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8447.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2094\" alt=\"Jackscrew mounted\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8447-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8447-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8447-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8447-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>They&#8217;re bolted in place with more 1\/2&#8243; fasteners. \u00a0I used heavier hardware than\u00a0was probably needed, but I want to be able to use the same system to keep the fuse nice and level when mounting the wings so a little overkill is justified.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8449.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2100\" alt=\"More jackscrews\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8449-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8449-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8449-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8449-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>With the jackscrews in place on all four corners, I leveled the fuse across the center section&#8230;the jackscrews made this really easy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8450.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2096\" alt=\"Front level\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8450-e1365367787544-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8450-e1365367787544-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8450-e1365367787544-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8450-e1365367787544.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>Looks good&#8230;nice and level. \u00a0Amazingly, when I placed the level on the tailcone I found..<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8454.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2102\" alt=\"Aft fuse level\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8454-e1365368228281-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8454-e1365368228281-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8454-e1365368228281-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/IMG_8454-e1365368228281.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>..it&#8217;s level too. \u00a0This is A Good Thing, it means the fuselage has practically no twist, and\u00a0that all the work I did to keep the fuse level while riveting, really paid off. \u00a0The digital\u00a0level occasionally showed 0.1 degree off &#8211; still completely acceptable &#8211; but with a little tweaking I got it back to dead center.
