{"id":2148,"date":"2013-05-06T08:53:39","date_gmt":"2013-05-06T12:53:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/?p=2148"},"modified":"2013-05-07T06:43:03","modified_gmt":"2013-05-07T10:43:03","slug":"nothing-to-it-but-to-do-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/?p=2148","title":{"rendered":"Nothing to it but to do it&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing to it but to do it&#8221;&#8230;that&#8217;s what my good friend Captain John says whenever he&#8217;s confronted with a seemingly difficult task on his RV-7 project. \u00a0I don&#8217;t have any really difficult tasks brewing right now, but there are a few things in the last week that required a little braining out and that&#8217;s when I tend to overanalyze things and make them more difficult than they really are. \u00a0Today&#8217;s post is an example.<\/p>\n<p>There are a couple of longeron-to-firewall gussets on the forward fuse that are actually leftover parts from the RV-6. \u00a0Because of that, they don&#8217;t fit precisely on the RV-7 and require some tweaking to fit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8481.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2149\" alt=\"F-696 gussets\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8481-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8481-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8481-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8481-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>The F-695 gussets tie together the longerons, upper firewall weldments and firewall stiffener, so they have to fit against three surfaces *and* also maintain proper 2D edge distance on the firewall and longeron rivets. \u00a0As delivered the gusset doesn&#8217;t fit flush against the firewall, which would compromise edge distance on the forward rivets in the firewall stiffener. \u00a0So after consulting with Vans I removed a very small amount of the gusset&#8217;s forward edge to make it fit flush.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8483.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2150\" alt=\"F-695 bend\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8483-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8483-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8483-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8483-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>I also had to put a slight upward bend in the forward edge (the bottom edge in this picture) to get it to lay flush on the firewall stiffener. \u00a0I also laid out the rivet holes not quite per the plans; because the gusset is a few 32nds shorter, the fore-aft rivet spacing had to be adjusted a little.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8484.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2151\" alt=\"695s pilot-drilled\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8484-1024x768.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8484-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8484-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8484-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I pilot-drilled the holes to #40, clamped the gussets in place, then enlarged the holes to #30.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8488.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2152\" alt=\"F-695s drilled\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8488-e1367843147721-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8488-e1367843147721-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8488-e1367843147721-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8488-e1367843147721.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>And they&#8217;re done, nothing left but to debur, prime and rivet. \u00a0 See what I mean about the overanalyzing comment?<\/p>\n<p>The only downside to all this effort is that I made a big freakin&#8217; mess in the forward floor&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8487.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2153\" alt=\"Lots 'o shavings\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8487-e1367843595998-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8487-e1367843595998-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8487-e1367843595998-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8487-e1367843595998.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve pretty much committed to installing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.garmin.com\/us\/products\/intheair\/sport-aviation\/g3x\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garmin&#8217;s G3X EFIS system<\/a> as my primary flight instrumentation. \u00a0Trying to get ahead of the avionics installation game, I bought a mounting bracket for the G3X magnetometer &#8211; basically an electronic compass &#8211; so I could install the bracket on the aft deck before riveting it in place. \u00a0Garmin makes this bracket specifically for the RV-7\/9 and has excellent instructions for aligning and installing it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8490.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2154\" alt=\"GMU-22 mounting bracket\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8490-e1367843701417-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8490-e1367843701417-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8490-e1367843701417-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8490-e1367843701417.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>The bracket is easy to install &#8211; only six rivets &#8211; but it&#8217;s important to get it aligned closely with the aircraft centerline, otherwise the compass will have a built-in heading error. \u00a0So I laid out a very precise centerline on the aft deck, clamped the mounting bracket in place against the forward flange, and match-drilled it&#8230;very easy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8491.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2155\" alt=\"GMU-22 bracket drilled\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8491-e1367844223374-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8491-e1367844223374-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8491-e1367844223374-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/IMG_8491-e1367844223374.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s nothing left to do but debur, prime and rivet all the bits-and-pieces parts I&#8217;ve fitted over the last couple of weeks. \u00a0I hope the Boston weather cooperates with priming&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s nothing to it but to do it&#8221;&#8230;that&#8217;s what my good friend Captain John says whenever he&#8217;s confronted with a seemingly difficult task on his RV-7 project. \u00a0I don&#8217;t have any really difficult tasks brewing right now, but there are &hellip;
