{"id":2517,"date":"2013-10-26T18:45:41","date_gmt":"2013-10-26T22:45:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/?p=2517"},"modified":"2013-12-09T21:34:50","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T02:34:50","slug":"rolling-onward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/?p=2517","title":{"rendered":"Rolling onward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Next up after the seats is fabricating the cockpit rollbar structure.\u00a0 This stout piece of structure protects the occupants (i.e. Ellen and me) in the extremely unlikely event that we find ourselves upside down on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>The rollbar is one of the few remaining &#8220;old school&#8221; aluminum.\u00a0 2&#8243; diameter holes are cut in each side of the rear channel to provide access for attachment hardware.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_86191-e1386028446972.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2521\" alt=\"Fly cutter\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_86191-e1386028446972-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_86191-e1386028446972-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_86191-e1386028446972-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_86191-e1386028446972.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used the flycutter to make these holes.\u00a0 Flycutters get the job done, but\u00a0require some finesse to get the hole diameters just right.\u00a0 Plus, the cutter\u00a0itself can be pretty dangerous as you can tell from the blurry spinning mass attached to the drill press &#8211; you don&#8217;t want to get a finger whacked by all that moving stuff.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_8627.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2523\" alt=\"Rollbar trimmed\" src=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_8627-e1386028701510-768x1024.jpg\" width=\"584\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_8627-e1386028701510-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_8627-e1386028701510-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/mightyrv.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/IMG_8627-e1386028701510.jpg 1944w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I laid out the maximum width and height of the rollbar on a piece of thick MDF and trimmed the inboard ends of each piece to make the width come out right, then trimmed the bottom ends of each piece to establish the correct height. \u00a0In the pic you&#8217;ll see the two rear halves clamped to the MDF board and held together by an 0.063&#8243; doubler that I fabricated and match-drilled in place.<\/p>\n<p>Truth be told, these pics are the from my second attempt at fabricating the rear rollbar half. For a variety of reasons that don&#8217;t bear repeating, my first try wasn&#8217;t so successful. \u00a0If you&#8217;re an RV builder and are reading this before you fabricate your rollbar, just remember to carefully lay out rivet spacing and edge distance. \u00a0Also, don&#8217;t worry about adjusting the flanges on the rollbar halves&#8230;that will just make it harder to get the parts to lay flat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Next up after the seats is fabricating the cockpit rollbar structure.\u00a0 This stout piece of structure protects the occupants (i.e. Ellen and me) in the extremely unlikely event that we find ourselves upside down on the ground.
